SORRY THIRDS HUMBLED BY 10 MEN FOORDS   Date: 24 Aug 09

Scarborough 3rds lost a gilt edged opportunity to all but clinch promotion, when they were beaten by 3 wickets at  already relegated Foords 2nds at Filey.

With Hunmanby beating Scarborough's nearest rivals Commercial to clinch the Derwent Valley League Division "A" title victory for Scarborough 3rds would have left them just  needing a couple of points from their final game against Snainton next Saturday, to obtain the runners -up spot.Instead this defeat leaves them only  3 points ahead of Commercial who travel to Heslerton 2nds.

After winning the toss Scarborough 3rds took first knock and looked well on their way to a healthy total when openers  Khaled Ahmed(36) and Alex Renwick (25) had racked up 74 from just 10 overs, before Ahmed was bowled hitting across a straight ball. When Renwick followed at 95 and Weatherill one run later the writing was on the wall for the promotion hopefuls.Scarborough's middle order were then blown apart with a further  four wickets falling in quick succesion leaving Boro' on 119 for 7.Anthony Hunter steadied the ship with a patient 25 but the innings closed on 162 all out in the 37th over.

The hosts , who  could only muster 10 men and who  are already relegated ,set about the task in a positive fashion against some ineffective bowling .At 71 for three in the fifteenth over Scarborough 3rds were still in with a shout but the game was then taken away from them when Jack Johnson, who had earlier taken four wickets, and Lee Calden(30) put together a match winning partnership of 49 in  only five overs.Jack Johnson who made 49 bludgeoned the Scarborough attack from his first ball but the visitors did not help themselves with some lacklustre fielding and poor catching. He was particularly severe on the usually dependable of spinner  Ian Renwick whose four overs went for 40 runs.

12 year old  leg spinner Jordan Welford with 5 for 46 was the only Scarborough bowler to  trouble the Foord's batsmen but even he could not prevent the hosts running out deserved winners with 3 wickets remaining.(see full match report)

Congratulations must go to Hunmanby who wrapped up the title with their win over Commercial .The other promotion place will go to the wire next weekend with Scarborough 3rds taking a  three point advantage over Commercial.
