The club has been very fortunate to have been awarded one of only 3 National showcase clubs as part of the National Natwest Cricket Force Event. The program is very much a volunteer driven scheme. The principal behind it is to motivate the club and the community to work together and welcome members, friends and supporters to all get together over a weekend, and in our case the principal day being Sunday 28th March, where as well as a working day, it will also be a family fun day.
Introduced to the club are suppliers such as Dulux Decorator Centres, Build Center part of the Wolseley Group who have committed an amount of material free of charge and any more required at very generous discount. Without these people it would be impossible to attempt the plan that is in place for Scarborough Cricket Club, and we are extremely grateful to them for their support.
The world renowned Scarborough Cricket Club is well respected for its festival but in terms of size in the UK it is one of , if not the largest ground outside of test match grounds with over 10,000 seats, therefore the maintenance of such a ground is extremely difficult and potentially financially crippling, therefore the need for this type of weekend is paramount to keeping the ground at its high standard, the saying goes it takes a long time to get it right but little time to let it slip, and with this in mind the time has come for major maintenance around the ground, making it more spectator friendly and offering all requirements to a reasonable standard.
The weekend will be built around the painting of vast areas, rendering of fairly large areas at both ends of the ground. General cleaning of the whole area and behind the stands where allegedly people never look but do!! The improvements of toilet facilities and general cleansing of the area.
We have been fortunate in agreeing in principal a maintenance schedule to be carried out by the Yorkshire Coast College in partnership which will be very much a community based agreement in that young people from Scarborough attending this college to learn their chosen trade, will have the experience of working on the ground to further their skills. This will be ongoing hopefully over many years to come, and we appreciate this agreement.
To break the work load on the Sunday, we will be supported by The ECB Cricket Road Show, along with The Yorkshire Cricket Throw Exhibition. Qualified coaches will be on hand to provide the youngsters with an insight into how enjoyable the game can be. Additionally on hand we will be priviledged to have from 11am 3 of the current England ladies Cricket Team, currently touring India, to give additional support to the coaches and youngsters. Refreshments through the day courtesy of Gibson Butchers of Ramshill will be available with coffee and tea in abundance! Those wishing to stay after the day are welcome to use the bar facilities for a well earned drink!
Needless to say the whole project is massive and cannot be completed over this single weekend and it is intended that many projects will continue with the help of the volunteers over the following months, under the theme of doing a little means a lot over a longer period of time.
The success of this project is paramount to the future of this club and the many local businesses who benefit from the supporters and players attending the club.
If you wish to support the club over this weekend or at any time, tradesman or volunteers are always welcome. |
