Coaching Schemes

Scarborough Cricket Club Coaching Schemes

Player coaching and player development is an essential part of Scarborough Cricket Club’s drive to remain a major force in Yorkshire League cricket.

All of the coaching is directed by Yorkshire’s Championship winning captain, David Byas.
Coaching is offered to club members from juniors entering the club, many at around ten years old, all the way through their development in the various teams.

There are five Level two ECB accredited coaches in addition to David Byas and Piet Rinke, three of them came up through the Scarborough development programme.

Junior Cricket generally comes under the control of Mark Welford, a lifelong playing member at Scarborough, and is assisted by John Green who played his cricket at Staxton.

Mark is a left handed batsman who has been a good player at all levels for the club and has now qualified as a coach at ECB level II and communicates particularly well with the junior players.

Other schemes offered by the club for development of junior players are “The Bill Foorde Scholarship scheme” and the regional “Chance to Shine scheme”

The Bill Foord Scheme is a five year programme for eleven to sixteen year olds. The scheme was started by Bill Foorde, a Scarborough legend who played for Yorkshire between 1947 and 1952. Each year group is coached separately for an hour using in door net facilities over a ten week period. In the season there are outdoor net sessions approx one per month. The Scheme is run by Mark Welford with the help of three Scarborough players William Gibson, Anthony Hunter and Mathew Kay who have all themselves progressed from juniors to now play in the Scarborough 2nd XI and all are qualified as ECB Level II coaches. Admission to this programme is by invitation from the Club.

Barry Mitchell has recently joined Scarborough Cricket Club from being a player at Bridlington and works with Piet Rinke in the Chance to Shine Programme, Barry is also an ECB Level II qualified coach. Chance to Shine is a national programme provided by an Independent registered charity The Cricket Foundation which is supported financially by the ECB, MCC, The Lords Taverners, Allianz, Slazenger and many other companies and private individuals. Its aim is to regenerate cricket in primary and secondary state schools in England and Wales. The local programme in this part of Yorkshire is delivered by Scarborough Cricket Club and currently involves one Comprehensive and six primary schools.

Last but not least is the Enjoy Cricket Scheme which is largely funded by the County. As part of this Scarborough usually run four, two hour, sessions on consecutive days in the first week of the school holidays. Schools put some young people forward but it is also an opportunity for beginners to come along to North Marine Road and be involved. There are no guaranties that you will progress to become a top player but hopefully you will come to enjoy cricket and you never know, you just might make it.

If you want to be involved in the Enjoy Cricket programme or become a junior or even senior player at Scarborough please contact the Club Secretary Colin Adamson on 01723 365625 or e-mail scarboroughcc@btconnect.com.
